The OSC: The Organisation of Southern Cooperation (OSC) is an international intergovernmental organisation, founded in January 2020 by countries from across the Global South, to “contribute to the equitable, just, and prosperous social transformation of societies by promoting balanced and inclusive education, in order to attain the fundamental rights to liberty, justice, dignity, sustainability, social cohesion, and material and immaterial security for the peoples of the world”.

General Description

Under the authority Secretary-General and direct supervision of the UnderSecretary-General of Public Relations and Engagement (PURE), the Chief of Section-News Media Relations is responsible for developing a robust media relations strategy that contributes to raising the public profile of the OSC in both traditional and digital media. The incumbent is also responsible for nurturing mutually beneficial relations with journalists, correspondents, editors and reporters and interesting them in understanding, appreciating and being partners in the systemic approach to development and transformation to build a third way of development.

Essential Job Functions

  • Under the guidance of the UnderSecretary-General for Public Relations and Engagement (PURE), develops and implements a robust media relations strategy to raise the public profile of the Organisation of Southern Cooperation.
  • Develops and maintains an active datebase of well-informed reporters, editors, correspondents who act as partners in the construction of a third, inclusive way of development
  • Take the lead in developing and supervising the production of a wide range of media products that will help increase OSC’s visibility to its external audiences
  • Develops and ensures the effective branding of OSC’s and its knowledge products in enhancing OSC’s global image and profile
  • Deploys the use of both traditional and modem information media technology including the social media to promote OSC’s outreach programme
  • Contributes to development of institutional media relations and engagement policies
  • Assesses the effectiveness of the news media relations strategy and programmes and prooses needed changes in approach and technique.
  • Prepares diverse materials (briefings, speeches, questions and answers) for use by senior officials,
  • Develops the development of high profile multi-media communications campaigns

Education, Experience and Qualifications

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related fields is required.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in media relations, public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area is required.
  • Professionalism: Knowledge of various aspects of communication and media relations. Ability to address a range of issues in the context of political developments, public attitudes and local conditions.

Ability to advise on high profile and sensitive communication challenges and opportunities. Ability to assess world-wide communication environments, develop communication strategies and manage implementation of media campaigns with various promotional and publicity techniques. Ability to produce a variety of written communications products in a clear, concise style. Ability to present and defend difficult positions to media.
